On October 31, 1517, a 34 year old German Monk named Martin Luther, hung 95 theses to the door of Wittenberg Castle, calling into question some of the basic tenants of the Roman Catholic Faith. This act sparked a movement to look at making some changes and reforms, and so began the Protestant Reformation. One of the major components of this movement was to recognize the authority of Scripture over that of tradition. When Scripture was studied, the reformers realized that there are only two commandments that Jesus gives to us - two things that he outlines that we must do - the first is to share in the breaking of bread and the drinking of the fruit of the vine and the second is to baptize people. In keeping with this tradition, Southport Congregational church freely offers these two Sacraments to all who request it.

The SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION

Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Understanding that this is a celebration of fellowship as well as sacrifice, we celebrate communion as a joyous act of thanksgiving for all God has done, is doing, and will do for us. It is also a sacred remembrance of the sacrifice of the crucified and risen Christ that reminds us that Christ is living with us every moment. We celebrate an Open Table which means that no matter who you are or where you are from or what age you are, all Christians who are seeking to know and understand the presence of Christ, are welcome at the Table.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of God. Through baptism a person is joined with the universal church, the body of Christ. In baptism, God works in us the power of forgiveness, the renewal of the spirit, and the knowledge of the call to be God's people always. Infants, children, youth and adults are all welcome to be baptized. For infants and children, as well as for youth and adults who have never been baptized before, baptism marks their acceptance into the care of Christ's church, the sign and seal of God's grace and forgiveness, and the beginning of their Christian faith and life. We recognize all baptisms, performed by all faiths, as valid and celebrated. Feel free to download one of the brochures below - one is about adult baptism at SCC and the other for infant. Due to Covid-19 please contact our Church Office for information on baptisms.
